Reporting from World Cup Watch Central.

Germany is the first to the quarterfinals, handing
Paraguay another agonizing 1-0 loss in the "octavos de
final."

In France, 1998, Paraguay took the host nation to the
end of game time in their round of 16 meeting, only to
lose in the "golden goal" overtime. France went on to
win the Cup. Again, in Seogwipo, Paraguay nullified
their opponent's attack, locking them in a midfield
battle, spreading and marking well at their own end so
that the Germans could hardly connect, and offering
more of an attack with better movement at the German
goal.

But it took just one pas de deux to get past all that
and decide the match. And it was just before the end
of the match, this time, preventing an overtime. In
the 88th minute, Germany's Bernd Schneider had room to
run along the right side at the Paraguay end, and sent
the ball straight across for Oliver Neuville to simply
deflect it with his foot into the net. Paraguay
goalkeeper Chilavert didn't even have time to make a
move.

Germany now awaits the winner of the Mexico v. U.S.A. match.
