In the 5th minute, Rio Ferdinand headed a corner from David Beckham that fell behind Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, who then knocked the ball on the goal line for an England goal. In the 22nd minute, Trevor Sinclair sent a pass into the box, Nicky Butt put his foot in front of it to flip it through the traffic, and Michael Owen stopped it, turned around and scooted the ball past the lunging Sorensen, just inside the post. In the 44th minute, a throw-in missed over Beckham, but was deflected right back to him by the Danish defender. Beckham crossed to the corner of the box, slid the ball over to Emile Hesky and Hesky fired a low shot that Sorensen's touch only deflected to the center of the goal. It was England 3-0 before the half. Denmark, meanwhile, had been infected by the French bug, missing badly on several good chances. The second half fell into the predictable prevent game, though England had much more poise than in previous attempts to sit on the lead. England had a few good chances of their own earlier in the second half, particularly a lightning strike by Beckham that Sorensen had to slap over the top of the goal, and one later on, a perfect jump by Sinclair to meet Robbie Fowler's cross, but headed just over the corner of the goal. Denmark was frustrated and out of synch, and then scrambling more urgently as time wore on, never had the poise they showed in their previous matches. They played through a downpour in most of the first half. England's rousing win has them through to the quarterfinals, a step further than their famous match with Argentina left them in '98. It's a big rally for a team that limped into the tournament, but also a show of their stock of talent, as many of the players are younger ones picked just before the tournament to replace others who were injured. Their next challenge is the winner of the Belgium v. Brazil match. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
