Eastern Conference ChampionshipWaves Crash YankeesThe Macon Waves blocked two Connecticut punts, the second one returned for a TD as part of a four-touchdown spree in the 2nd half that turned a close game into a rout. Connecticut running back Rex Holmes, starting for the injured Randy Bastard, on the first play after the third of those TDs, fumbled the ball back to the Waves, setting up the 4th TD. The Waves used the rushing game, as expected, including Randy's older brother Hugh and their more recent star, Moe Lester, to try to control possession in part to keep the ball away from the best passing offense in the league, led by Connecticut quarterback, and Eastern Conference MVP, Cary A. Bigstick. Lester rushed for 71 yards, Hugh Bastard for 63, and Macon QB Boyd Bwane added 58 yards and a TD rushing. Bigstick passed for just 208 yards and 2 TDs. Because of better field position set up mostly by Macon's big defensive plays, Bwane had 3 TD passes on only 109 yards passing. Wall proved to be the key man, as the Yankees would've feared. Despite holding him to a respectable 55 yards receiving, the Yankees were still stung by Wall for 4 TDs. The Waves head to the Hyperbowl for the first time since the franchise was in Macon, having gone in 1992 as Savannah. |

Western Conference ChampionshipJacks Off GodsThe Monterey Jacks ended the stunning campaign of the Olympia Gods behind rookie quarterback, Xavier Onassis, turning aside the MVP and the top seed in the West as just another contender in the Jacks' own return to the conference title and bid to become the first team to win four Hyperbowls. Division rival and defending league champion Las Vegas, a rival also for posterity with Monterey, was the warm-up to 13-2 Olympia, the team that had jumped over everyone, including another surging team, division rival Lincoln, to become the best team in the league in the regular season. The catalyst was Onassis, as significant a draft pick as quarterback Payne Indiass had been for Wichita a couple of years earlier. The Jacks gave up 222 yards and a TD passing to Onassis, the TD to All-West tight end, Luke Filthy, and 89 yards of the passing to veteran wide receiver Marion Joseph. But the Jacks were just enough better with the most dominant running back in the game, Buster Hymen, and more significantly, here, wide receiver Ira Fuse. Although the Gods minimized Hymen's damage, 1 TD but only 54 yards rushing, Fuse was instrumental in Monterey's win. Monterey kicker Orson Beanbag was also dependable, hitting both field goal attempts, including the difference in the score. |
