Fifth Time's a Charm for High-Flying Doves

The Sled Dogs' surprising tournament ride came to an end, and so did the Doves' string of losses in the championship game. Bleeding Heart for the first time in five appearances in the SCAB final was the favorite, and for the first time in this tournament the favorite was too much for the Heroes of Polar Exploration Memorial College.

The Sled Dogs worried enough about Demetrius Award-winning WR I.B. Long to cover him with two people, shift their zone, or drop linebackers off the run, and they paid for it dearly, as Bleeding Heart quarterback Felix Post rushed for 109 yards, threw to TE Hugh Main for 112 yards and a TD, as well as to his running backs, and Main as well as RBs Gibson Gibbs and Layton Feelings rushed for TDs. Gibbs had two. Despite all the attention, Long caught 6 passes for 62 yards and a TD.

The Doves scored the first time they got the ball, Post having time to check all his receivers before he took off on a 35-yard run to the HPEMC 7-yard line. That was a 4th-down play. Two plays later, Gibbs carried in from the 2. Bleeding Heart K Owen Bytheway missed the extra point and later missed a field goal, but little else failed for the Doves.

The Sled Dogs responded to that first TD with a drive to a Spike Heels field goal, then in the second quarter, after Bleeding Heart had gone up 20-3, came up with some slick offense of their own, marching 80 yards in 12 plays. HPEMC QB Saul Etude completed 6 of 7 passes on the drive, the last one a 7-yard TD to WR Alan Woolf. The Sled Dogs also chipped out points along the way, Heels hitting 4 field goals of 5 attempts, but they could not stop Bleeding Heart the way they had so astonishingly Northwestsoutheastern and State Pen. on their way to this final. And the Sled Dogs made it worse for themselves by giving the Doves some help, as if they needed it. Etude threw two interceptions, both times on the Sled Dogs' half of the field, and RB Wolfgang Rape fumbled to the Doves on his own 26.

Rape, the league's leading rusher and a Demetrius Award finalist, was the main weapon for HPEMC as expected, and led the game's rushers with 82 yards. The Sled Dogs also had some big passing strikes, and WR Alan Woolf had 5 catches for 64 yards and a TD.

But the manifold Bleeding Heart attack was the story it had been all season: the best player in league at WR, RBs just as dangerous a receivers, and when even that was fairly handled, Post breaks for big runs and finds TE Main for big gains. In addition to his rushing, Post was 19 of 31 for 234 yards and 2 TDs passing, and was named the most valuable player of the game.
