Hellfires Sink Seamen

Brimstone saved the best for last, ripping Lady Warship the way the latter had done opponents all season long and proving the Hellfires had indeed the more complete team. The score may have been closer than the game was. Not only did Olivus, runner-up to Lady Warship RB Dick Payne for the Demetrius Award, have the sort of game he does to dominate opponents, but Brimstone QB Lou Suffer passed for 302 yards and 2 TDs, and rushed for 50 yards and a TD, adding insult to injury as Brimstone pushed around Lady Warship every which way.

The opening drive set the tone, as Brimstone had their way with the Fighting Seamen defense that had stifled nearly every prior opponent. A 14-yard pass from Suffer to WR Titus Sass started it off, and Olivus and Suffer each had runs of 13 yards. In all, Brimstone took 15 plays and nearly half the first quarter, a sure way to keep the Lady Warship offense at bay also. The Fighting Seamen stiffened up at their own end zone, and Brimstone opted for a 22-yard field goal from K Yul Agri with a 4th and goal on the Lady Warship five-yard line.

Brimstone's defense had not been as impressive statistically during the season as Lady Warship's, but it had been the Hellfires' strength, especially during the tournament. They held Lady Warship to a three and out for their first series. The next Brimstone possession ended the same as the first, with a fourth and goal at the five and a 22-yard Agri field goal.

But from there things broke quickly, faster downhill for Lady Warship. After gaining their first first down on an 18-yard pass from QB Harry Beaver to WR Ben Dair-Dundatt, Beaver was sacked for a ten-yard loss. Brimstone took over on their own 33-yard line after a punt. Then after two incompletions, Olivus made his statement. He had three runs: 12 yards, 29 yards and 26 for the touchdown.

Brimstone forced another three and out, then after a botched punt, had a short field, from the Seamen's 40. The next play was a 25-yard pass from Suffer to WR Drew Lotts. Three plays later, Suffer took it in from the seven. Brimstone had scored on their first four possessions, and Lady Warship had netted 15 yards.

The Fighting Seamen kept the scoring streak going on their next possession, driving 80 yards in eight plays, the big one a tight end reverse by Sum Yung-Ful. Sum finished off the drive with a 3-yard reception from Beaver for the TD. Brimstone missed a field goal and the score stood 20-7 at the half.

Lady Warship scored again on the opening drive of the second half, but only a 34-yard field goal from K Slim Chance. After an exchange of punts, Brimstone had another explosive drive, 80 yards in six plays, Olivus with runs of 17 and 13 yards, and a 27-yard reception for the TD. The Hellfires would not let Lady Warship score again, despite one very long drive spanning the third and fourth quarters. They rubbed it in with an 80-yard drive to end the game, Olivus running for a 6-yard touchdown on the final play from scrimmage.

Brimstone won their first SCAB championship in their first trip to the Galactic Soup Bowl. They finished a complete undefeated season. Lady Warship has now lost three championship games, the others in 1996 and 1997.

Payne First Runningback Since 2000

Lady Warship's Dick Payne became the first runningback to win the Demetrius Award since Brimstone's Dave Rath in 2000. He's Lady Warship's second recipient. Buster Hymen won it in 1997, also a runningback and the holder of the SCAB single-season rushing record.

Payne's win was also by one of the closest margins. His 15 points tied in the final tally with Brimstone RB Evelyn Olivus, but Payne was the winner of that tie by virtue of his rank in the final Demetrius poll. Two other players, Bigfoot QB Harry Bastard and State Pen QB Reed Rights, had 14 points.

Payne's contribution to Lady Warship's perfect record and most dominating play, after several player of the week performances in the early season, boosted him in the final poll after two others, Bastard and UPRNY WR Hugo Gurl, suffered late losses. Gurl seemed to be running away with the Award with his record-setting season, but in two late Shark losses, Gurl did not do well, and fell out of favor. On the other, Payne probably just avoided the late surge of Olivus, whose last four performances were outstanding, including a six-touchdown game. But the Brimstone rusher had done enough before that, and Lady Warship had been more impressive than Brimstone

Payne is a junior, so will have a shot at repeating the award next season. His runningmate in the backfield, Buster Rass may be his biggest competition next year. The sophomore finished 10th in the final tally.
