Galactic Soup Bowl
Spitters put exclamation mark on dynasty
Some wondered if it would happen, some expected it. Some thought it just a matter of odds. After two tournament games in which the Spitters were tested in ways they were not during the season, and after two previous championship games in which they didn't look quite as impressive, would the Spitters finally blow the doors off a championship game? Some said it didn't matter: a win would still mean a three-peat to match Whooperville A&M and Northwestsoutheastern, a seventh champtionship to tie the latter, and three straight seasons without a loss, for a record 45-game winning streak. Legacy wouldn't care what the score of this game was if it were part of all that.
But along with all that, the Spitters blew the doors off the championship game, easily setting records for point spread and most points scored by one team. The record for any tournament game is the same number for both spread and points by one team: State Pen beat Dunne-Geep 68-0 in the 2002 Dust Bowl. But for Kootsville Tech to make a championship game that lopsided is definitely an exclamation point on their incredible three-year run.
The Brimstone Hellfires got to this Galactic Soup Bowl in an amazing parallel to the 2011 Holy Grail season. Just as the Swallows did then, Brimstone finished fourth in their conference, then beat every tournament opponent as an underdog to end up playing their conference champion. In the case of 2011, Holy Grail upended Northwestsoutheastern who would go on to win the next three championships. Brimstone came into this game with a stunning 41-13 pounding of Mountain Valley.
The suspense was carried into this game when Brimstone stalled the first Spitter possession for a 29-yard field goal, then scored on a 73-yard pass play to senior WR Eubie Leeve. The play was improvised on a fourth down after an apparently botched snap. QB Justin Kredabul was the holder and was able to get the ball out to Leeve who had nobody in his way to the end zone. It was a busted play, but the luck of the Hellfires seemed to be continuing. As it turned out, they needed the luck.
The Spitters answered, quickly and as spectacularly. Demetrius Award winning QB Harlan Daggers didn't need a receiver to cover that distance. When he went back to pass and found the Hellfires chasing his receivers down the field, he took off and covered 74 yards to the end zone. It was the third play of the Spitter possesion, on third down and four.
Kootsville Tech would score again before the end of the first quarter, a 31-yard pass from Daggers to WR D.O. Durant setting up RB Justin Krotch's 6-yard run. In the second quarter, Brimstone stalled one long Spitter drive that ended in a failed field goal attempt. But the Spitters finished off the half with another long drive that ended with a 16-yard TD pass from Daggers to TE Dub L. Nichols.
The first half looked much like the regular season game between the conference foes. Kootsville Tech won that 31-7. Here again they were dominating possession and stifling the Brimstone offense, but were already a TD short of that previous score. In the second half, however, the game would turn into something very different, also from their second half of the Western Semi with UFO, where the Spitters failed to score. Here the Spitters would score on every possession.
RB Chester Doggon Minnit scored on a 5-yard run, RB Justin Krotch scored on runs of 5 yards and 1 yards, WR D.O. Durant scored on passes of 4 and 25 yards, and WR Luke Daggers scored on a 13-yard pass play on the game's last play. Brimstone got to the Kootsville 30-yard line once and missed a field goal.
Daggers was named the game MVP. Krotch had 98 yards rushing and 3 TDs. Durant had 8 catches for 110 yards and 2 TDs. The Spitters held Brimstone to 145 yards passing and an astonishing 10 yards net rushing. |

Daggers Finally Gets the Metal
Kootsville Tech quarterback Harlan Daggers was awarded the Demetrius Award by the Illegitimate Press as the SCAB's most valuable player for the 2017 season. It's what had been expected of him since before he even chose to wear the Spitter red and black. After the shocker for last year's award, there was really no suprise this year, but he certainly accomplished everything else in the meantime.
As the top recruit in his class he was already the most sought after player, even though he was already intended for Kootsville Tech. From his first game he was the most significant player in the SCAB, tilting the balance in favor of the Spitters who had lived in the shadow of the Northwestsouthestern dynasty. With a combination of running and passing skills like perhaps none before him, at the head of the Spitter play-action offense he became the most dynamic force in the league, and led the Spitters to the championship his first year.
Then in 2016, his sophomore year, he crushed passing records of some of the legendary passers of SCAB history, when he was not supposed to have been such a pure passing talent. Most impressive was his breaking the 1000 mark for passer composite, surpassing by nearly 70 points the record of State Pen's Upton O'Good set in 1997. Some thought that would never happen. He broke O'Good's 1998 record of most passing yards and the mark of most TDs passed for held by three QBs, including O'Good and South Paw legend Marion Havkitz. He topped that by four: 52 to 48.
But in one of the biggest surprises in SCAB history, the 2016 Demetrius Award went to Bunyan QB Hugh Jasso because of his player of the week honors tally. This year, however, there was no one close, even in that. Daggers and the Spitters have been untouchable in their march for a third straight championship. Daggers broke his own record of QB composite set last year, with 1621.2 points combining rushing yards and passer composite. He was the second leading rusher in the Little 10 behind teammate Justin Krotch, with 745 yards, good for 16th in the SCAB.
