Cody Pendant Plays Second to None
Moonshine State quarterback Cody Pendant was named the recipient of the Demetrius Award as the most valuable player of the 2019 season in the SCAB. Pendant was the league leader in both passing composite and quarterback composite, the latter combining the former with rushing. He was the second player from Moonshine State to win the award, after quarterback Armand Hammer in 1980.
While Pendant is dual-threat, spread option quarterback in the vein of Harlan Daggers, the Kootsville Tech quarterback who won the last two Demetrius Awards, he was more dominant in passing this season, topping the passing composite by 60 points, and leading the league in net completions, completion percentage and passing touchdowns. He completed 71% of his passes, and led Moonshine State to second place in the Little 10 to host the Toilet Bowl. He also led them to their first ever I.P. poll number one ranking which they held for several weeks in the middle of the season, before losing a close shoutout with State Pen.
The Award tally was the closest since 2009, especially since the top four candidates were all within a point of each other. But despite the tally, which combines a final overall ranking with player of the week awards, there was not much doubt to the result. The top four candidates had the same player of the week tallies, with five each, so the final ranking decided it, and there was little chance for Pendant to be topped.
Kootsville Tech running back Justin Krotch had the best rushing season since Lady Warship's Buster Hymen in 1997. His 150-yard performance in a tie with Moonshine State was enough to close the gap between him and Pendant, but after the Spitters lost to State Pen to finish fourth in the Little 10, rather than first, he could not overtake Pendant. DeSade S&M freshman quarterback Sherwood Feelgood was among the top ten rushers most of the season and finished 14th, leading the Leathermen to the top of the Pack before failing the conference crown on the last week of the season. Quarter Noah Peel was the league's second best passer leading State Pen to the Little title and defense of their league championship.
