Puke Makes Mess of Records

The 1991 Puke Mess didn't just finish the regular season undefeated and first in the polls. They did it like no other team before, literally. The 1979 Bunyan team had been the best team statistically before this year, and that team will retain at least one distinction. As for the rest, the Puke team that just completed its regualr season will go gown as the best team ever. Puke averaged 57.75 points per game in 1991, surpassing 1979 Bunyan's mark of 53.73.

The individual team members were so successful in their respective statistics that they gave Puke another team record: the most ever All-SCAB selections from one team. Puke had five players on the All-SCAB first team, surpassing, among others, the 85 Puke team, which had three. Puke also had five members on its all-conference squad, a record for that conference.

Puke became the first team with players who led the nation in each and every individual offensive statistical category. Coach Reggie Bowels was named SCAB Coach of the Year a second time consecutively and a third time overall, giving him distinctions on both counts. Puke also becomes the first school since the SCAB was formed to have two All-SCAB quarterbacks, Boils this year and Elvis Jacket of 1985. Lance Boils broke the single-season record for TD passes with 53, surpassing Marion Havkitz's mark of 50 set in 1986. Boils also set the record for total TDs accounted for, with 58. Tight end Colin Alcarse led the nation in scoring with 21 TDs, becoming the first player ever to score that many in a single season. Kicker Jan Hills set the mark for field goals in a single season with 36.

And Lance Boils received the Demetrius Award by the largest margin since the point system has been utilized.

Now Puke goes into the tournament hoping ot repeat their success of 1985. Of course there are several records even Puke will be hard pressed to accomplish, such as winning a third championship, something done by both Kootsville Tech and Whooperville A&M, not to mention winning three consecutively, something done only by Whooperville. But by almost any measure the 1991 Puke team will go down as one of the greatest teams, if not the greatest team of all, perhaps for a long time to come. The one distinction still held by the 1979 Buyan team that Puke did not come close to erasing is the defeat of eight opponents by shutout.
