Puke Sticks to Top

Puke finished a third straight regular season undefeated, the only team ever to do so. The Mess has a regular-season winning streak of 38 games dating back to 1989 and also has the longest running win streak of all games at 27 going into the tournament. A repeate of their national championship of last year will give them 30 straight victories, two shy of the mark held by Kootsville Tech, plus of course a second consecutive and third national championship, distinctions held also by Kootsville Tech and Whooperville A&M (who won three in a row). Puke has not lost since the semi-final of 1990. Puke can also sweep the I.P. poll's number one rankings for the entire season by winning the national title, as they were the pre-season top team and have remained so since.

Lance Boils, Puke's quarterback, won the Demetrius Award for the second straight year, making him the first player to do so since the award became SCAB-wide. Jack Rabbit, running back at Kootsville Tech, won the award in 1978 and 79, but the award was still only give to Little 10 players the former year. Boils won the award by only one point over PU tight end Bernie Bus a much slimmer margin than the record eight points of last year.

Skunks, Leathermen, Sled Dogs Emerge

Three conferences changed leaders this year, as PU and DeSade S&M won their first conference titles and the Heroes of Polar Exploration returned to the 10 Clan title, their second in three years. For PU the campaign was perhaps sweetest, since they finished in the upper half of the conference last year for the first time. DeSade S&M ended three seasons of frustration chasing their Pack crown by knocking off perennial power Northwestsoutheastern the final week.

Milestones

  • PU tight end Bernie Bush tied the record for most TDs in a season, 21, set last season by Colin Alcarse of Puke, another tight end.
  • This was the year of the tight end. Not only was there Bush's feat, but the top six and seven of the top ten receivers were tight ends.
  • State Pen stunned even themselves when they set the new mark for scoring by a single team in one game: 99 points v. Swampmush St. The old mark was 94 by South Paw in 1986.
