Vince Spleen wins second Demetrius, breaks records
Puke quarterback Vince Spleen received the Demetrius Award as the most valuable player of the 2024 season in the SCAB. Spleen is the 4th Puke player to win the award, but the has won the 5th and 6th Awards. Lance Boils, now his head coach, won back-to-back Demetrius Awards in 1991 and 92. Spleen is the second player since Cretin QB E. Chitton Dye to win the award twice but not consecutively, and Spleen went the longest between the awards. He won as a freshman in 2021.
Spleen also added records in the Demetrius tally to the records he set on the field in the season. He got the most points ever in the Demetrius tally, 23, comprising 10 points for his first place in the final poll, and 13 points for Player of the Week awards during the season, including national Player of the Week award twice. The 7-point spread over the next nearest tally is tied for second most, behind the record 8 held by Boils in 1991 and DeSade QB Payne Indiass in 2002. While Spleen fell short of the passer composite record held by Kootsville Tech QB Harlan Daggers, he broke the QB composite record of Moonshine State's Cody Pendant, 1687.9, with a total of 1701.1. Spleen also set the new record for passing yards in a single season with 4,021.
In the rivalry with Birddrops QB Amos True since they arrived the same year as the two highest rated players, Spleen ended up getting the second Demetrius, after True won it last season with a 983.1 pass composite. Spleen became only the third player to pass the 1,000 mark, with 1019.1, behind Daggers's record 1041.3 and Pendant's 1038.9. True finished 2nd in the tally this year, 7 points behind Spleen.
Northwestsoutheastern freshman RB Dustin DeBrie, the league's leading rusher and the top rated player in this year's new class, finished 3rd, with the same total but with higher final poll position than DeSade S&M QB Justin Joyett, the top rated player in last year's class. State Pen RB Anthony Kilder finished 5th, Cretin QB Arlo Asteem 6th. Lady Warship QB Colm Waters was something of a surprise at 7th, but had Player of the Week awards totaling 6. The top 10 was filled out by Little Bighorn QB Phillip DeSkript, who also did well in Player of the Week honors, Spleen's favorite target at Puke and the league leading receiver WR Colin Sick, and freshman TE Harry Balzac who boosted Bigfoot from last to 3rd in the 10 Clan.
