Amos True stats edge out team achievement
Birddrops Aeronautics School quarterback Amos True received the Demetrius Award as the most valuable player of the 2023 season in the SCAB. True became the second Ragin Rooster to receive the award after QB Boyd Bwane in 1994.
In a season with one team, Puke, towering above the rest, True and Puke QB Vince Spleen separated themselves and seemed to be the only players in the race in the first half of the season. Two years ago, when both came in as freshmen, True was the All-SCAB pick for QB and Spleen won the Demetrius Award. Many thought that would happen again based on Puke's success when Birddrops lost enough games in their conference play to eventually keep them out of the tournament.
Meanwhile, two other players rose up based on individual stats separating one and team achievement for another: Granola RB Haji Shuks, and DeSade S&M QB Justin Joyett. But True kept his lead in the passer composite despite Birddrops' fate, and went on to post the 3rd highest in history, falling 17 points short of the 1,000 mark, surpassed by only Kootsville Tech's Harlan Daggers and Moonshine State's Cody Pendant. He also ended up with the top QB composite mark, edging Spleen.
The final tally was one of the closest, with only one point separating True, Spleen and Joyett, and Shuks finishing 4th but well behind those three with just 9 points. In the end, the historic numbers of two and the team achievement of the other two put them on top, and while Shuks' average of more than 100 yards rushing per game put him apart from all other rushers, Granola's losing record couldn't lift him further. But True's passing composite was enough to edge out the other QBs.
